Session description

It is the year 2024. Our ‘world leading universities’ struggle to attract international Masters students because immigration charges now cost almost as much as the course. Meanwhile, fewer and fewer domestic students can afford PGT study because the government has left the postgraduate loan… alone… for almost ten years. Over in PGR land the constraints on UKRI studentships will probably make you cry. Oh, and there’s this thing called the Lifelong Learning Entitlement, which doesn’t seem to know postgraduate study exists. But fear not! This session will offer a bit of data-driven therapy, explaining where opportunities for Masters and PhD recruitment can still be found and suggesting some ways around the inexplicable obstacles placed in front of UK universities by their own government.

I feel compelled to think of myself as an involuntary swindler.” – Albert Einstein

I have written 11 books, but each time I think ‘Uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody, and they’re going to find me out”. – Maya Angelou

If Albert Einstein & Maya Angelou suffered from Imposter Syndrome, what chance do the rest of us have? Imposter Syndrome is not classed as a mental illness, but researchers describe it as a psychological pattern in which individuals doubt themselves; they do not feel that their accomplishments or talents have been earned, and have a persistent internalised fear of being exposed as a ‘fraud’. In this session, Jo explores this pattern of behaviour and how it has impacted her working life and that of other colleagues in HE. She will also equip you with tips and methods to help you understand and overcome.
